Is this the best way to tackle diabetes...?

26 July 2005

I've suspected it for a long time, but now I know for sure...

I'm being stalked by the most ruthless serial killer of modern times...

SUGAR!

There's just no getting away from it.

Sugar is the root cause of some of the worst ailments affecting us today...including type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

'Sugar is without question the number one murderer in the history of humanity', said Sakurazawa, a Japanese natural health expert and author of 50 books on the subject.

So I guess he knows what he's talking about.

And of all the ailments associated with sugar, diabetes seems to be on the march, especially type 2 diabetes.

But fear not!

I've recently come across something that could help you battle diabetes. It could, and I quote, '...even help sufferers reduce - and in some cases eliminate - the need to take insulin.'

That's a pretty extraordinary claim.

But then, as you're about to discover, Patrick Quillin Ph.D, RD, CNS, is a pretty extraordinary doctor.

Here's an extract from his book - The Diabetes Improvement Program...

Why cut off your thumb...?
--------------------------------

Imagine if I slammed my thumb in my desk drawer every morning for a week.

The first time it happened, it really hurt.

The next day, I do it again and my thumb swells up. By the end of the week, my thumb is blue and red, bloody and painful.

So I go to Doctor A, who tells me he'll inject my thumb with anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce the swelling.

Hmmm... I'm not so sure.

So I get a second opinion from Doctor B, who tells me that she wants to give me pain medication to help me tolerate the discomfort.

Alarmed, I seek a third opinion from Doctor C, who wants to cut off the thumb because it looks defective.

AAARGGGH!

Of course, the real cure here is to stop slamming my thumb in the desk drawer.

So what's that got to do with diabetes?

Well, let's look at the case of Mrs. Jones.

Mrs. Jones leads a pretty easygoing life. She eats badly...not enough fibre, too much sugar and the WRONG fats in her diet.

This lowers her insulin resistance, which leads to Mrs. Jones developing Type 2 diabetes.

She feels tired, which only makes her eat more junk food and do less exercise, which makes her diabetes worse...

It's a never-ending spiral.

Mrs. Jones' poor diet is her 'slamming her thumb in the desk drawer.' Yet her doctors try all sorts of hypoglycemic drugs, which work briefly, then stop having any affect. They subdue symptoms, but don't address the thumb in the desk drawer.
Let's see what does.

How to get your health moving in the right direction - a brief guide.
---------------------------------------------------------

- You are your own best healer! If you truly believe that you can improve your health through diet and lifestyle changes, then you CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

- Lose weight - but never call it a diet! 90% of Type 2 diabetics are obese. If you can lose a little weight, you'll start to see considerable improvements in your blood glucose regulation.

- EAT NATURAL WHOLESOME FOODS! Think like a caveman, and eat fresh fruits and vegetables, chicken, turkey, meat, eggs and bread, beans and rice.

- Discover the power of Macronutrients. Mix your food in a ratio of 25% protein, 25% fat and 50% complex high fibre carbohydrates. This means, looking down at your dinner plate, you need to have about a third of it covered with lean pork or beef or beans - another third covered with cooked plants foods like vegetables, bread, potatoes - and the final third should be uncooked plant food like salad.

- Flush your body! Drink at least 8 cups of clean water daily.

- Get the paper (but make sure you go the long way round!). A brisk 30-minute walk every day is essential for your diabetes-beating program.

Thanks Dr Quillin. Some real food for thought there!

There's a whole list of vitamins and natural substances that Doctor Quillin recommends you should blast your body with as well, but there are too many to go into here.

Some are commonplace, like vitamin C and zinc, but others are new to me, like bitter melon extract, and the tasty sounding vanadyl sulphate.

He also hates the word diet, just like I do. And he encourages occasional treats, which makes his diabetes improvement program such a joy.

Now, before you start throwing out all your cakes and biscuits, don't worry...

I'm the last person in the world to start nagging you to cut out sugar and treat your body like a temple.

So if you can enjoy the occasional bar of chocolate or cream cake, go ahead... ENJOY IT!

But it's always a good idea to make sure you control the good things in life, and not the other way round.

Likewise, it's always good to try and control illness rather than letting it control you. And if you suffer from diabetes, The Diabetes Improvement Program could be just what you're looking for.

That's it for today. My back's eased up now, so I'm off for a brisk thirty-minute walk.

And if it's in the direction of the bakers and a fresh cake, well... that's just coincidence.

Till Friday,

Ray Collins
