Why there's fuss over pomegranates

7th July 2006

There's no nonsense today.

No silly jokes or strange stories. (Big 'aaahhhhhhhh' from the crowd.)

Instead, I'm going to get straight down to business and deal with my evergrowing email inbox.

As you know, I can't give out one-to-one advice, but I can certainly publish my findings in these letters.

So here goes…

---------------------------
The fuss over pomegranates
---------------------------

One Good Lifer write:

“Can you please tell me what all the fuss is about regarding Pomegranate Juice, it's in all the shops and apparently celebrities are raving about it but I don't understand why!”

Well, M.L, thanks for the email. Pomegranates are a fantastic health fruit. They can help prevent cancer and heart disease.

But make no mistake. The reason there's a load of fuss about it right now, is that the mainstream media like to jump on bandwagons. Some celebrities recommend a health product - it's suddenly a hot topic and you get to hear about it.

For instance, you might have seen the article about it in the Daily Express last Saturday. They wrote:

“A daily glass of pomegranate juice can hold back prostate cancer and could even prevent men dying of the disease, new research has shown. Just one 8oz glass of juice per day increased the stability period of prostate cancer four-fold, scientists found. The effect was so pronounced it may allow older men to avoid dying from the cancer, experts believe.”

“Simply by drinking pomegranate juice, a man of 65 to 70 with prostate cancer could complete his normal life span without having to undergo harsh medical treatments.”

Pretty good endorsement, eh?

Thing is, there are hundreds of similar natural preventative remedies out these. You just have to wait for Posh Spice or Jade Goody to say they eat it, and it's news.

Carry on reading The Good Life letter and you'll hear about them ALL, long before they hit the headlines. I've got my feelers out!
I'm not saying that articles in the papers about fighting prostate cancer is a bad thing, however. I applaud the Express for publishing their article.

But, chaps, you're going to need more than a bowl of fruit.

I would recommend you get hold of 'How to Fight Prostate Cancer & Win'. This book shows you how to reduce your chances of developing prostate cancer and other prostate problems, just by using some simple, commonsense steps.

Take a look here:

Avoid sunburn with lavender
----------------------------------------

I got a useful email from a professional nutritionist…

“Another fantastic tip for sunburn (or indeed any burn including radiotherapy) is lavender oil. As soon as you realise you're burned just cover the area in lavender oil and keep doing that every 15 minutes for a couple of hours. Then ease off to once every couple of hours (depending on the severity of the burn).

“I've been using this for about 8 years now, (since I had terrible radiotherapy burns) and I always keep a bottle in my kitchen drawer for cooking burns. It works.”

Thanks very much, D.W! Perfect timing, too, as we seem to be getting heatwave after heatwave….

More about phytoplankton
-----------------------------------------

Remember my email about 'What Whales Can Teach Us About Nutrition' from a few weeks back?

(If you haven't, go to www.goodlifeletter.co.uk and have a browse.)

Well, A.D, writes:

“I have been online to the company you mentioned and they only supply America and Australia. So there's no chance of getting the phytoplankton mentioned at the moment. The product contains naturally about 30 vitamins and minerals. If you heard of anyone supplying this product please let me know where I can contact them.”

As I said in that letter, these products only appear to exist in the US at the moment. But you might get more information from this email I received from another reader.

“As a follow-on from your info about Marine Phytoplankton, I thought this page about Krill might be of interest:

Marine Phytoplankton

“There is more information about it on the rest of his site, but I can't find the email with the direct link. But as you like to 'fish around' I'm sure you'll find it on his site somewhere!”

Nice pun, T.R.

I see my style of Dad-jokes are catching on!
--------------------------------------------
And more on the topic of water…
---------------------------------------------

I've also had a lot of emails about water, after I published a chunk of 'The Complete Book of Water Healing', into a letter a few weeks ago.

Just so you know, my copy of 'Your Body's Many Cries for Water' by Dr. F Batmanghelidj has arrived this week, so I'll read it soon. Thanks to everyone who recommended it.

Good Lifer, M.F, wrote to me, saying:

“I think we greatly underestimate the value of water in our lives. I was particularly interested that you mentioned early in the letter that Water Therapy can be used to treat migraine. When you get time to read the rest of the book I would be very interested to know what the technique is for migraine - if you could include it in another letter.”

Well, I did read the rest of The Complete Book of Water Healing, and I liked it so much, I am trying to get some kind of deal with the publishers so you can have a risk free read of it yourselves.

(Watch this space.)

But right now I am more than happy to give you Dian Dincin Buchman's advice. On page 229, he writes:

“Migraine headaches can be devastating. A friend who is a film actress called to ask if I knew of a herbal or water therapy solution to her debilitating migraine attacks.

“We devised a simple plan in which she was to use first a brief hot shower and then a brief, but slightly longer cold shower. She was to do the following on a regular basis:

“Every day, soon after she arose, or on working days two hours before going to work on the set, she would take a short shower followed by a brief (a little longer than the hot) cold shower. In addition, if she had a premonition or a warning signal of the migraine attack, she was to stop whatever she was doing and immediately take a hot-cold shower in her dressing room.

“The two showers have an opposite effect, and this both shocks and calms the body. And in her case, helped to avert attacks. My friend found relief with this approach.

“After using these procedures for about three months, the migraine attacks abated and almost disappeared after a time.”

Hope that helps.

I'll write again very soon.
