Prevent unwanted hair growth… with tea

2nd March 2007

It's one of the cruel ironies of life.

Men spend their young years desperate for manly hair to appear... so we can shave like our dads, grow moustaches and fancy sideburns for the ladies...

Then suddenly, before we know what's happening, we're old and desperate for the hair to stay on our heads.

It literally falls off us as we do the gardening and worry about tax rates.

Conclusion?

Men LOVE hair. But hair HATES men.

As for women... well, you spend your lives thinking about hair and colouring... always wanting what you can't have... the curly girls want straight hair (remember the fashion for ironing hair in the '60s?)... and the straight haired girls want wavy hair.

Then, before you know it, you're in your later years and worrying about even MORE hair growing in unsightly, embarrassing places...

Conclusion?

Women also LOVE hair. And, even worse, hair LOVES women, too.

Luckily, ladies and gents, I've found some natural solutions to the problem...

Spearmint - the female hair hater!

In Turkey, researchers have just discovered that drinking Spearmint tea may help to control excessive hair growth in women, known as 'hirsutism'.

The problem of hirsutism is caused by male androgen hormones including testosterone. All women produce these chemicals, but when production gets excessive, you can get unwanted extra hair growth on your stomach, breasts and face.

The researchers had heard that extracts of spearmint plant were reducing the libido of men in Isparta, a town in southwest Turkey. They wondered whether it was reducing their male hormone levels.
So they put it to the test on 21 women volunteers with hirstuitism. They found a decrease in active testosterone in the blood and an increase in several female hormones.

They say it's early days yet, but it could be that drinking the tea twice a day can reduce the levels of male sex hormones in your body.

How to make spearmint tea

Spearmint tea comes from the plant Mentha spicata in the Mediterranean. The ancient Romans said it had the ability to 'stir up the mind.'

Not sure exactly what they mean by that… but then again, they were all marrying horses, drunk on wine, and eating while lying down…so let's take it with a pinch of salt.

Spearmint leaves are - surprisingly - spear shaped and crinkly. You can make the tea by pouring 250ml of boiling water onto a heaped teaspoon of dried spearmint leaves.

Now leave it for 5-10 minutes, strain…. and drink!

Spearmint tea is also good for treatment of stomach ache, can fight nausea, heartburn, morning sickness and mild indigestion.

Could this product prevent baldness?

So we've worked out that perhaps spearmint could be the key to preventing hair growth in women.

But what about men?

Well, the issue of male pattern baldness and other hair loss problems is a throny one. Mainly because marketers and unsuprulous companies play on the desperation of men to restore their locks.

There's a lot of exploitation when it comes to this subject, and I'm not about to join the fray.

My advice is to learn to LOVE your baldness. Make it a feature of you personality and get your hair cut to suit the style. Usually, that means VERY short.

I know the pain of it all because one of my oldest and dearest friends started going bald when we were at university together. He was a bit of a boffin, however, so it kind of fitted his temperament.

He's now a very successful, hair-lacking, journalist in Hong Kong. Never stopped him getting far, or the ladies liking him!

All this said, however, there is one product I've heard a few encouraging things about.
This could help slow the hair loss

Folligro comes in capsules and oral spray which should be used together to help prevent hair loss.

Note that I say 'help prevent hair loss'... and that I don't say:

RESTORE A FULL HEAD OF HAIR IN 7 DAYS AND GET WOMEN FLOCKING TO YOUR DOOR.

I'll leave that to the scamsters.

There's some good herbal science behind Follogro, which is based on a concoction of fenugreek, B vitamins and saw palmetto. These are natural substances which can help lower the amount of hair your scalp sheds.

You can look for this product in your local chemist, or type it into a search engine and shop around.

Although male pattern hair loss is partly genetic… therefore not-preventable... it can also be worsened by hormonal imbalances. This is why there is some solution to be found in natural herbs, even for this inevitable problem.

As the Turkish researchers recently found, there IS a seeming link between active plants and human hormones. And human hormones are instrumental in telling the scalp what to do with your hair.

Mind you, when I say 'recently found', I mean
'recently found by modern Western science'.

As you know, seasoned Good Life reader, ancient cultures relied upon herbal medicines for many ailments.

It's my job to seek them out and get the information to you!

Until next time, then,
