My weather hell!

27th October 2006

It's all over the place, this weather of late, isn't it?

Each day, I go for my 'healthy' stroll (including a pint of bitter at my favourite pub, but hey, I deserve it after an walk… and like I always say, the Good Life is all about BALANCE!)

But I have never quite get the clothing combination right.

It's sunny when I leave the house, in a light jacket and a hat. Then the wind starts up, so I am walking with one hand clamped onto the hat. Then I am tilted into a rainstorm, soaking wet, cursing myself for leaving behind an umbrella.

So I get to the pub, chilly and wet. The consolation is that this is actually very good fitness training. Twenty minutes brisk walk a day is fine… but I do 40 minutes.

Hark at me, the Steve Cram of Bristol!

Once in the pub, the sun comes out and begins to stream through the window, so I am now back down to a t-shirt.

Then the rain starts up on the way out, so it's jacket on… then a bit of wind… so hat off… and back to sunshine again, making me sweaty by the time I get home.

Recently, it's just been rain. Which is fine. As long as it's CONSISTENT!

Yes, I know. It's a tough life for a freelance writer.

“You're turning into a cantankerous old sod,” said Lara, after I told her all this.

But she's wrong. You see, I'm happy enough about the rest of my life to be bothered to complain about the weather.

It's sign of contentment!

And what about you?

And how about you? I hope you are enjoying my website?

A lot of people seem to be using it to look up my past ravings about various ailments and natural remedies.

Great! That's what it's there for!

If you want to know my opinion on something, the search facility is the best way to go. Of course, you should always consult your doctor first before drastically changing your diet. Don't wait for a Good Life Letter to come to the rescue if you are seriously worried about a health issue.
But if you want me to research stuff in the future, by all means email me. I do get a huge amount of emails every week, so don't be disappointed if I can't write a personal reply.

My ambition is to eventually get a forum on the site. That way, people can ask other Good Lifers about remedies, cures and tips. I still have to look into the practicalities of this, but I'll let you know.

In the meantime…

Some of your emails answered here!

Here are a couple of good tips on the subject of eye-care from my recent email postbag.

B.A writes:

“Sweet almond oil, applied before sleeping, will heal just about ANY eye problem. It is an old Ayurvedic remedy.

“Warming the oil first is good. Put two drops of sweet almond oil into the inner corners of each eye before sleeping, tilt the head so that the oil covers all the eye.

“I place a strong tissue over my pillow so the oil does not stain the pillow, otherwise wipe the eye area very gently before settling down.”

Ease the pain of acid reflux

Still on the subject of the Good Life postbag, here's another query from a reader:

“I am desperately seeking a natural cure for acid efflux. I am suffering and am afraid
to take the drugs with the horrendous side effects.”

Acid reflux occurs when acid from the stomach leaks up into your gullet (oesophagus). This causes heartburn and other symptoms

Nasty. And a lot of the conventional drugs do have side-effects. But always consult your doctor about the problem first.

Then try drinking about 1 gallon of filtered water, enough to keep your urine a light yellow shade.

Take some good quality probiotics. These are available in a range of yoghurts, milky drinks and tablets.

Garlic can help increase bowel flora and kill pathogenic organisms such as H. pylori. Make sure the garlic is fresh. Chew it or crush it using a spoon before swallowing it. Or even better, add it to your juice!

And finally today, a strange-but-true reader's tip…

An odd use for a cabbage

My learned reader says:

“You may be interested to know that the Chinese use a poultice of cabbage leaves to treat leg ulcers. I have used it on sufferers and it works!”

It's true. Cabbage leaves have been used for centuries to treat leg ulcers, eczema, acne, cold sores, burns, shingles, and chronic wounds.

Just shows how much traditional eastern medicine can teach us about health. Even with our bleeping machines and expensive drugs.

More facts and fascination this weekend!

Yours, as ever
